早前看到一份通告，說一位原本打算來香港演出的指揮家因病未能出席有關表演，而文中用了”indisposed”形容他生病。因此我想在今期繼續談一下「生病」。
Indisposed意指生病
跟ill與sick兩個字一樣，indisposed這個字說一個人因為生了病，以致原本要做的事沒法做。
提及自己或別人生病，除sick和ill外，其實還有很多其他選擇，看情況決定哪個字才恰當。
請看一下例子：
Smith, who was originally scheduled to conduct, is indisposed and has had to withdraw.
原來演出的指揮家史密夫因病未能出席，需要退出指揮崗位。Mary is indisposed with fever; her part will be played by Shirley.
瑪麗因病(發燒)而不能演出，她的角色改由莎莉主演。Shirley will also stand in for an indisposed singer.
莎莉亦將代替另一名因病不能演出的歌手。
Indisposed屬官方用語 日常對話用unwell
然而，indisposed是官方用語，通常在正式公文中使用。一般日常對話或社交場合裡面，若說某人病了而缺席，通常會說他not well或unwell，即是抱恙、不舒服的意思。
例如：
He is not well and will not come to the party.
他有點不舒服，不會出席這個聚會了。She is not feeling well and will be absent.
她有點不舒服，將會缺席。The manager is feeling seriously unwell and the meeting has to be cancelled.
經理感到很不舒服，會議必須取消。Although she is slightly unwell, she will still do the presentation.
她雖有少許不適，但仍會繼續做匯報。
其他生病常用字詞 更口語的用法
此外，還有一些常用字表示生病，例如off-colour及under the weather。
It’s just an expression here. Like the gloomy, sluggish type feeling you can have when the weather is bad.
這只是一個表達。就像天氣不好的時候那種令人沮喪的類型感覺一樣。

你今天看來有點不適，還是休息一下吧。You seem under the weather. Perhaps you’ve got flu.

其他建議因病取消的用語 來說出你的原因
接下來是解釋你需要取消計畫了。用：
The reason I called is that…
我打電話過來是為了…The reason I wanted to speak to you is that…
我是為了…理由來跟你交談告訴他們原因。一旦你引起了他們的注意，你可以說：
I’m sorry. But I have to cancel (the appointment).。
我很抱歉，不過我必須取消（這個預定）如果你在一個非正式的場合，你可以說：
I’m sorry but I can’t make it to (the appointment).
我很抱歉，但是我沒辦法趕上（這個約會）
